I translate books, travel guides and lifestyle content into Spanish. I am from North Spain but I live in The Hague, and I have more than15 years of experience.
“Life: what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans”
I wasn’t supposed to end up here.
My plan (or rather everyone else’s plan for me) was a teaching post at a secondary school in northern Spain, a mortgage, and a lifetime of explaining medieval literature to teenagers who couldn’t care less.
I had the degree, the years of substitute teaching, and the entrance exams on the horizon.
Then came the summer of the eclipse.
In 2000, at a Spanish course in Santander, I discovered that the internet was good for more than blocking the phone line.
I met people from Italy, Turkey, England.
My world, which had always been defined by language, suddenly had no borders.
One connection led to another…
… and eventually to a Dutch boyfriend and a one-way ticket to The Hague.
I arrived in the Netherlands with basic Dutch learned from a German lady in Gijón, a big IKEA table, some folding chairs, and a textbook called Caminos.
I started teaching Spanish from home, and then in company classes, including, memorably, a group of croupiers at the Casino in Scheveningen.

Then a translation agency offered me a book about Utrecht. I said yes. I had no idea what I was doing.
But I learned.
A chance encounter at the baby clinic led to a job at the Hague Conference on Private International Law, where a French colleague introduced me to Trados.
Every door in my career has been opened by a human connection, not a job listing.
Almost twenty years later, I translate books, travel guides, and lifestyle content. The kind of texts that carry a voice, a place, a feeling. Texts that need to arrive in Spanish not just accurately, but alive.
